Australian skill visas and Qualifications
Australia has a Skilled Workers shortage. Australian General Skilled Migration Scheme (GSMS) allows individuals with certain skills and work experiences the opportunity to qualify for one of the skilled visas to immigrate to Australia.
There are a number of visa options in the skills category. All applicants in the skills category must be under 45 years of age and have functional English. At the present time the main categories for Australia Skilled Immigration are:
Australia Skilled - Independent Visa (Subclass 175)
This is a permanent residence visa. As a permanent resident you are permitted to remain in Australia indefinitely. Eligibility for this category of visa, you must have good English language skills and be highly skilled and have post-secondary qualifications, nominate an occupation on the skilled occupation list, obtain a successful assessment from the relevant Australian assessing authority for that occupation and have recent work experience. This visa uses a points test to select visa applicants with characteristics needed in the Australian labour market. You do not require sponsorship to apply for this visa.
Skilled - Australian Sponsored Visa (Subclass 176)
Eligibility for this category of visa, you must be highly skilled and have post-secondary qualifications (e.g. degree or trade certificate), nominate an occupation on the skilled occupation list, obtain a successful assessment from the relevant Australian assessing authority for that occupation and have recent work experience. Applicants must be either sponsored by an eligible relative living in Australia or nominated by a participating State or Territory government. This has a lower points test than the independent visa above.
Skilled – Regional Sponsored (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 475)
This is a three (3) year temporary (provisional) visa for people who have a lower pass mark and are prepared to live in Regional Australia. This is the most commonly used program for employers to sponsor overseas workers to work in Australia on a temporary basis.
